Happy Almost Summer! As I write this it is a sunny, warm day in Sunriver. My hanging baskets are blooming and I am ready to plant my “deck garden”. There is nothing like summer in Sunriver.

Our new normal has become social distancing, wearing a mask, and washing our hands. Some of our social clubs are getting back together under the guidelines implemented by Deschutes County, the State and SRWC policy. Book clubs have been meeting via Zoom and the Hearty Soles will start hiking with new guidelines in place.

This will be a noticeably quiet summer for the SRWC with the cancellation of the Incoming/Outgoing Board and Committee Chairs luncheon, Community Picnic, and Sunriver Art Fair. I love all our SRWC events and I am going to personally miss each one. It was heart breaking to cancel the Sunriver Art Fair. Kathleen Meyer and her team have been working so hard since October 2019 to put on another “top 10” art fair. My heart also goes out to the artists who will miss, yet another, means of income.

The good news through all of this is that we have a very generous community from our members to community members to local organizations that have “stepped up” and donated to the COVID-19 Nonprofit Emergency Fund, which is over $25,000 and is still growing. Our Philanthropy team has been working hard vetting nonprofits in south Deschutes County and will continue until we have disbursed the last dollar from this fund.

Starting June 1, you can renew your SRWC membership online with dues remaining the same at $40; membership year is from October 1 – September 30. We have changed our accounting reporting so that dues cover our operating expenses, which allows net proceeds from all fundraisers go directly to our general philanthropy fund.

The Board and Board Assistants started their new term on May 19 and we will have our first Board meeting on June 18 via Zoom. Yes, even with events being cancelled, the Board continues to meet as SRWC business never stops. We have many returning Board members and assistants, but also some amazing women have “stepped up” to new positions and I personally thank each of you.

As always, if you need anything, please reach out to me at (925) 708-4587 or srwcpresident@gmail.com.

    Stay safe and healthy!

Happy Spring! My daffodils are blooming and our sprinklers have been turned on, which tells me it is Spring. However, this is not the Spring that any of us anticipated; social distancing, face masks, Zoom meetings and take-out food are the “new normal”. I hope that all our members, their families, friends and extended families have continued to stay healthy.

Our “Celebration of Giving” luncheon scheduled for May 19 has been cancelled. This was formerly our “Giving Luncheon” but the Board wanted to take it in a new direction where we celebrate not only our sponsors, but our amazing volunteers, philanthropy recipients and community members that make the SRWC the outstanding organization that it is. I was looking forward to introducing our 2020-2021 Board of Directors, Board Assistants, Committee Chairs and Activity Chairs.

What started as a conversation as to what the SRWC could do during this pandemic, turned into the COVID-19 Nonprofit Emergency Fund, which has raised over $15,000 and continues to raise money for nonprofits in south Deschutes County.
Thank you to our members, community members and local organizations who have graciously donated.

As always, our members are “steppin’ up during this difficult time” by making face masks, checking on and picking up groceries for friends and neighbors, dropping off treats for friends, supporting local restaurants with take-out orders, practicing social distancing and wearing face masks.

Please continue to read this newsletter for details on all SRWC events. For the most current information, please check our website or email blasts.

As always, if you need anything, please reach out to me at (925) 708-4587 or srwcpresidents@gmail.com.

    Stay safe and healthy!

As I write this message, I hope that all our members, their families, friends and extended families are healthy. I am inspired how the SRWC has stepped up during this difficult time.

A call went out to our members with a request to sew emergency masks for St. Charles Hospice and our members “stepped up”. Approximately 60+ masks will go to St. Charles Hospice. Thank you, Marilyn Daggett, for getting this project started.

After receiving emails from members on how the SRWC could help during this difficult time, the Board approved the COVID-19 Nonprofit Emergency Fund. Our initial goal is $5,000 and SRWC members are responding generously. Please read more about this Emergency Fund in the article below. Thank you to Cheryl Storm, Debbie Baker, Kris Besson, Shirley Olson, Ann Juttelstad, Linda Rico and Corinne Gentner for their hard work on this project.

We also asked our members to help in a variety of ways during this difficult time. Our members responded as I have heard of members picking up groceries for others, administering Facebook groups to help the southern Deschutes County community, inviting members to go for a walk (practicing social distancing), checking on other members by sending emails or making phone calls and ordering takeout from our local restaurants and the latest—sewing emergency masks and donating to the COVID-19 Emergency Fund. I’m always so proud of our members. Because of all this, I have changed our motto for this year to:

“SRWC Steppin’ Up During this Difficult Time”

All of us, including the SRWC, have been affected by the coronavirus. However, the most important thing is that everyone stays healthy, practices social distancing, washes hands and stays in place. My mom always told me when I was having a difficult time, “this too shall pass”.

All April events have been canceled. Under our Bylaws, we must hold our Annual Meeting in April to vote on the proposed slate of officers. This year we will hold our Annual Meeting via email. Look for an email around April 5 with the proposed slate of officers and instructions on how to vote plus a “Year in Review” of the SRWC.

As always, if you need anything, please personally reach out to me at (925) 708-4587 or srwcpresidents@gmail.com.

    Stay safe and healthy!

To protect the health and safety of our members, the SRWC is relooking at all events for March and April. Please note that as time progresses, we may alter the schedule below. Winter Gala Planning Meeting - postponed

How Can SRWC Members Help During This Difficult Time??:

I have received several emails from members asking how the SRWC can help in the greater Sunriver community. Some requests were to publish names of those infected with COVID-19 to how we can reach out to help the community. Please note that under HIPPA regulations and to protect the privacy of our members, the SRWC cannot publish names of those infected. However, we can reach out to our neighbors, friends and members in a variety of ways:

    1) If you are going to the grocery store or pharmacy, call and ask if they need anything. You can leave the items you pick up on their front porch.

    2) Personally send an email or call a neighbor, friend or member and ask how they are doing. Some of us (especially those that live alone) may be feeling isolated, anxious or depressed.

    3) If healthy, take a friend for a walk and practice “social distancing”.

    4) Don’t just reach out to your immediate circle of friends, reach out to members that you may have recently met or may not have met. Send an email or call just asking how they are doing? You may brighten someone’s day!!!!

     5) And finally, but also important; if possible, support our local restaurants by ordering “food to go”.

If you need anything, please personally reach out to me at sunrivernancy@gmail.com.

Please stay safe and healthy during this difficult time.

    Best,
    Nancy

Happy March!  Our monthly luncheon will be March 17th at the La Pine Senior Center. It’s St. Patrick’s Day, which means corned beef on the menu. Bingo starts at 12:45 pm and I can already hear SRWC members yelling “BINGO”.

Volunteering is one of ways that you can contribute to the SRWC. We have almost 300 members and it takes very close to 100% participation to put on all our fundraising and social events from the Art Fair to the Art Auction & Wine Event to the Winter Gala to Kid’s Day and Twilight Cinemas. We also need volunteers to lead hikes, lead winter fun activities and Loose Cannon events, volunteer at the Community Picnic, host a birthday lunch and run a book club. For the SRWC, it takes a village (or our members) to make all our events successful. If you attended the Volunteer Open House for the Art Fair and Art Auction & Wine Event, you may have already signed up to volunteer. However, we also need volunteers for other events, i.e., the Community Picnic. Please contact me directly at srwcpresidents@gmail.com and I will personally make sure you are hooked up with the right committee. You can also go directly to our website where there is a listing of SRWC gmail addresses where you can contact the event chair personally. Thank you in advance!

Power of 100+ voting started in February and continued until early March. On March 8, at Past SRWC President Debbie Dunham’s house, there will be a kick-off event to announce the winner of our next Power of 100+ grant. All members are encouraged to attend and bring a friend or two. We would love to make this a community fundraiser! Power of 100+ = 100+ people who donate $100 each = $10,000+!

The New Member event is scheduled for Monday, March 23 at my house. If you are a new member for the 2019-2020 membership year, you will be receiving an email from me. If you do not, please contact me at srwcpresidents@gmail.com.

We asked and our members provided...the winter wear program has been extremely successful this year. Thank you to all who donated to the program.

As always, read the Newsletter for further details on all our events and fundraising opportunities. Thank you for “Steppin’ Up for Friends, Fun and Philanthropy”!!!
